If you were a socialite in the Newport of 1913, you would be familiar with the Blue Garden created at Beacon Hill House for Mrs. Arthur Curtiss James — a sensation whose debut was described

in the Newport Daily as “one of the most novel entertainments ever seen in Newport.”

The garden’s fame was spread by Mrs. James’s unusual generosity: She opened the garden to the public every Fourth of July.
