As the train descends from Zurich to the southernmost region of Switzerland – Ticino – you could be forgiven for thinking you had unwittingly crossed into Italy: the temperature climbs; wooden lodges give way to terracotta apartment blocks; the language on the Tannoy changes from German to Italian.
