The House of Savoy’s royal palaces, castles, manor houses and hunting residencies: an artistic heritage that last year was visited by two million people, on which Turin plans to invest to increase tourism.

The regional government of Piedmont has recently passed a resolution to create a true cultural itinerary of the Piedmontese estates of Italy’s former royal family, with the Venaria Palace (Reggia di Venaria Reale, pictured) as the linchpin. Throughout the history of our Sceptred Isle, some things have never changed.

Little girls like to dress up as princesses. Their brothers want to play with swords. And everyone — without exception — laughs like a drain when grown men get a whack in the cobblers.

At Warwick Castle, we experience all three at supper, shortly after arriving.

I say supper, but this gargantuan buffet is q… (View original article)

The Do-Over: One Man’s Castle

Visitors to Mike Newman’s property will find before them a castle that Newman has created on his 20-acre property piece by piece for the last 10 plus years, culminating in what is seen here. Unlike its early counterparts, the 21st century castle has air conditioning running water and other conveniences–it’s his home. Photo Contributed

Homes are always a work in progress, regardless of whether you own a tiny house or, as in the case of Mike Newman, a castle on the rolling fi… (View original article)

She took a short walk through the village, turned right at the war memorial and then she saw Corfe Castle for the very first time.

As she wandered its jagged ruins she would have been as giddy as her hyperventilating heroes, the Famous Five, for she had discovered the setting for their very first adventure.

In Five on a Treasure Island, Blyton set … (View original article)

Great Estates: the castle that was the inspiration for Bleak House which holds a race called ‘the Suffering’

As well as the house and the events, they run a 2,500-acre farm, 500 acres of woodland (the rest of the land is tenanted), and manage 60-70 residential properties. The idea of making Rockingham into such a diverse business would have been unthinkable to the 20th-century custodians, says Saunders Watson. “They let the house once for a hunt ball and the people trashed it. You just think, god, never again. Thankfully the opportunity set has changed.”
