The monument dedicated to the men killed during the June 7, 1919 riots has been returned to St George’s Square in Valletta.

Loved and hated in equal measure, Anton Agius’s monument had been shifted from its original place to make way for the embellishment of the Valletta square.

The monument languished in storage for some time before being moved to Valletta’s Hastings gar… (View original article)

Brodsworth Hall: how a haunted House is being brought back to life

Peeking into long-deserted bedrooms is a chilly experience. Some doors are locked and others swing open, and it’s as though the last occupant rises up to greet you in the form of stale rose talc or some kind of hair lacquer. Some lights work and others don’t, and some of the rooms seem positively to suck you in. The door marked ’14’ opens to reveal serried ranks of chairs covered in dust sheets: they appear to be bustling towards the door saying, ‘Choose me, choose me.’  Frankly, it’s a reli… (View original article)

A grand European river cruise | Vancouver Sun

Watching brilliantly lit Budapest glide past, the Blue Danube waltz swirling in my ears, and a fiery little glass of pálinka in hand to ward off the nighttime chill, I realized how deeply satisfying it is to travel without moving.

In a mad quest to experience Europe’s countless cultural, culinary and natural wonders, previous Continental itineraries involved lots of rushing, or more often waiting, for the next train, plane, bus or ferry, unpacking and re-packing at various accommoda… (View original article)

B.C. castle now a popular tourism – and wedding – spot | The Chronicle Herald

VICTORIA — The grey, cool mist of an autumn morning briefly hides the full glory of the castle on the hill.

But the fog soon gives way to bright sunshine, and light shining on stained-glass windows spreads a kaleidoscope of colours across a decked-out 19th century dining room table.

A step inside Craigdarroch Castle is a walk back into history, when a mighty coal baron built a monument on a rocky outcrop overlooking the city of Victoria to announce his stature and prom… (View original article)

Developer David Ball is out to rescue the Pythian Castle. He bought it from the Lucas County Land Bank for $300, which also handed him a check for $274,300. That’s nice work if you can get it. But if he can restore life to the dying building, he’ll nonetheless have Toledo’s appreciation.

The 126-year-old landmark has been vacant for 41 years. It has a striking, unique exterior, and some beaut… (View original article)

Super rich up in arms over St Tropez private jet ban

He said the decision would increase helicopter traffic between the nearest big airports, like Toulon or Cannes, “and this will increase disturbance (for locals) and will eventually put customers off coming to France.”

Alexandre Durand-Viel, who runs the Château de la Messardière, a five-star hotel, and is a representative of the hotel union and shopkeepers’ assocation, said the move could jeapordise St Tropez’s privileged position as a jet setting hub.

“These people rarely st… (View original article)

Should we ensure that the Palace is fit for a Queen? | Grimsby Telegraph

Comments (5)

I WAS surprised that no-one has commented about the Government committing £369 million of public money to repair Buckingham Palace, especially when plans seem to imply that other pensioners living in publicly-owned accommodation will in future be hit by the ‘Bedroom Tax’.

In other words, they will only get help for the size of property that is deemed they need.

Royalists, of course, say that the Queen attracts tourists from other countries. But I rec… (View original article)
