An archaeological dig starts on Monday as part of a £4.4m scheme to bring a historic site back into community use.
The excavations are at the 14th century Hylton Castle in Sunderland.
Earlier this year, the castle project was awarded £2.9m from the Heritage Lottery Fund to add to £1.5m in match funding from Sunderland City Council.
