The trouble with castles is that they’re big and expensive and draughty. Castle Cottage in Newport-on-Tay, Fife is a user-friendly alternative, although it too is rather draughty and you’ll need to muster a good deal more than the £195,000 asking price to make it habitable. Built in 1812, it’s a homage to the Strawberry Hill gothic style championed by Horace Walpole and sits eccentrically among its conservative neighbours on the banks of the river Tay.
