As well as the house and the events, they run a 2,500-acre farm, 500 acres of woodland (the rest of the land is tenanted), and manage 60-70 residential properties. The idea of making Rockingham into such a diverse business would have been unthinkable to the 20th-century custodians, says Saunders Watson. “They let the house once for a hunt ball and the people trashed it. You just think, god, never again. Thankfully the opportunity set has changed.”
